The EnviroScience Corporate Responsibility Committee recently organized a volunteer day with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) to support habitat restoration at Singer Lake Bog in Green, Ohio.
Five employees, including three from EnviroScience and two from ACRT Services, joined CMNH staff and volunteers to support restoration efforts at the preserve.
Owned and managed by CMNH, Singer Lake Bog is a 344-acre nature preserve and home to more than 50 acres of leatherleaf bog, the largest of its kind in Ohio. The preserve also contains rare glacial barren habitat that supports unique plants and wildlife, including rare, threatened and endangered species.
During the August 27 volunteer day, the group helped move logs, branches, shrubs, and other woody material that had been cut from an area CMNH is working to restore as barren habitat. Removing encroaching woody vegetation and clearing the cut material helps maintain the open conditions these rare natural communities need to thrive.
Prior to completing the restoration work, the team took a short hike to learn more about the habitat they would be helping to restore, Singer Lake Bog’s unique ecology and CMNH’s ongoing efforts to protect the preserve.
The volunteer day offered employees a hands-on opportunity to support local conservation efforts and contribute to the restoration of one of Ohio’s rare natural communities.
