Birds are excellent bioindicators that can be used to evaluate ecosystem health because of their sensitivity to environmental changes. Since 1970, populations have been rapidly declining due to a variety of factors such as habitat loss, forest fragmentation, pesticide use, urbanization, and climate change. As a result, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and individual state regulatory agencies maintain lists of rare, threatened, and endangered bird species that require additional protection when development projects occur within their range or associated habitats.
EnviroScience biologists are highly familiar with the agency consultation process and subsequent surveys that may be required during all phases of project permitting and development. Bird surveys are often restricted to specific times of the year so we highly recommend initiating the coordination process with both the USFWS and state agencies as soon as possible in the project planning process to avoid delays or other restrictions to project completion.
EnviroScience bird survey capabilities include:
- Full coordination with USFWS and state regulatory agencies
- Records Search and Desktop Review
- Habitat Suitability Assessments
- Site Inventory
- Raptor Surveys
- Breeding Bird Surveys
- Wintering Bird Surveys
- Nest Searches and Monitoring
- Habitat Management and Conservation Plans
- Biological Assessments
