The CMP designation is a distinguished professional credential awarded through FMCS’s Mollusk Professional Certification Program. The program evaluates candidates based on their education, professional experience, scientific contributions, and involvement in the field of malacology, including research, publications, and presentations.

“Receiving this certification is a meaningful milestone in my career,” said Zimmerman. “This designation isn’t simply awarded. FMCS conducts a thorough review of an individual’s lifetime of work, including education, professional experience, presentations, and publications, against a high standard. I’m grateful to the board for its detailed review and recognition, and proud to continue supporting freshwater mussel conservation through our work at EnviroScience.”

Decades of Expertise in Aquatic Resource Management

Zimmerman has been with EnviroScience since 1996 and brings decades of experience in aquatic surveys, freshwater mussel identification, and scientific diving. As vice president, he coordinates major projects and company-wide initiatives and previously oversaw the company’s commercial diving services.

An approved U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) freshwater mussel surveyor, Zimmerman has worked with more than 90 freshwater mussel species throughout the United States, including seven federally listed species and numerous state-listed species. His experience includes designing and managing large-scale Endangered Species Act surveys, biological monitoring programs, and aquatic impact assessments.

In addition to earning his CMP designation, Zimmerman recently received an amendment to his federal recovery scientific collection permit through EnviroScience, expanding its geographic coverage. The permit now collectively covers authorized scientific work involving freshwater mussels and fish in more than 20 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, with additional coverage in other states. While Zimmerman previously conducted work in many of these locations under state agreements, the expanded federal authorization further strengthens EnviroScience’s ability to support clients with aquatic resource assessments, protected species surveys, and regulatory compliance needs across a broad geographic area, subject to applicable permit conditions.

Supporting Complex Projects and Environmental Compliance

Freshwater mussels play an important role in aquatic ecosystems, and their presence can be a significant consideration for infrastructure development, waterway improvements, restoration initiatives, and other projects involving aquatic resources.

With experienced aquatic biologists, scientific divers, and environmental specialists, EnviroScience helps clients navigate these challenges through freshwater mussel surveys, threatened and endangered species assessments, biological monitoring, and regulatory coordination.

Zimmerman’s certification and expanded federal permit authorization reinforce the technical expertise behind these services, helping clients identify environmental considerations, address regulatory requirements, and make informed project decisions.
