EnviroScience Hosts NESOWEA Members with Educational Tours at Headquarters

On September 21st, 2017, EnviroScience, Inc. hosted approximately 75 members of the Northeast Section of the Ohio Water Environment Association (NESOWEA) at its headquarters in Stow, Ohio.   Members lined up in small groups to receive tours at EnviroScience for continuing education credits.  Presenters at each station were EnviroScience biologists who provided insights into four environmental topics—toxicity testing (Kate Hansler, Laboratory Technical Supervisor), algae identification (Brad Bartelme, Algal Taxonomist/Aquatic Ecologist), ecological restoration (Neal Hess, Environmental Scientist), and scientific and commercial diving (Greg Zimmerman, Corporate Vice President).

Since the majority of guests were professionals in the wastewater industry, the focus of each presentation was given on current trends and regulations that might affect the industry.  Attendees had the opportunity to look through microscopes at the algae station, watch drone footage of restoration sites, see the toxicity lab’s many work stations, and learn about crucial commercial diving equipment.  EnviroScience biologists were happy to answer any questions and talk to members one-on-one after presentations.

After the tours ended, attendees met at the Heritage Barn in Stow for lunch and technical presentations. Presentations included:

  • “SWPP Plans and BMPs for WWTPs” by John Kwolek (EnviroScience)
  • “Biological Data in WW Permitting” by Paul Anderson (EnviroScience)
  • “Ohio’s New Asset Management Regulations” by Kevin Slaven (Arcadis)
  • “Sodium Hypochlorite, Problems in Solution” by Tom Sanderson (City of Akron)
  • “Phagotrophic Algae with Waster Activated Sludge” by Peter Bugg (Ovivio)

The event was a success as many guests left with a stronger knowledge of current environmental, water-related issues and regulations.
