When ecological restoration succeeds, the results extend far beyond a project boundary. Healthy streams support healthier watersheds. Restored wetlands improve water quality and resilience. Native forests and meadows create habitat for wildlife. And sometimes, those benefits become visible in unexpected ways, like a black bear recently captured on camera at Talcott Creek Preserve in Thompson Township, Ohio.
The sighting serves as a reminder of what’s possible when conservation organizations, funding partners, and restoration professionals work together toward a common goal.
Completed in June 2025, the Talcott Creek Restoration Project transformed a degraded agricultural landscape into a thriving mosaic of stream, wetland, forest, and meadow habitat within the Talcott Creek–Grand River watershed. The project was led by West Creek Conservancy in partnership with EnviroScience, RiverReach Construction, and GPD Group and represents a significant investment in the long-term health of Northeast Ohio’s natural resources.
From Agricultural Fields to Ecological Opportunity
The project began with West Creek Conservancy’s acquisition of a 114-acre property in Thompson Township. Within the property, approximately 47 acres of former agricultural land bordered Talcott Creek, an EPA-designated coldwater stream and tributary to Ohio’s State Wild and Scenic Grand River. Despite its ecological importance, a quarter-mile stretch of the creek had been channelized and ditched to accommodate agricultural land use, resulting in degraded habitat, erosion, sediment accumulation, and diminished water quality.
EnviroScience and project partners were tasked with restoring both the stream and the surrounding landscape to better reflect natural conditions while improving ecological function throughout the watershed.
Rebuilding a Stream System
To restore Talcott Creek, the project team implemented a combination of stream restoration approaches designed to reestablish natural channel form and function.
The existing channel was partially filled and realigned to create a more stable, sinuous stream corridor. Floodplain connectivity was restored, allowing water to spread into adjacent areas during high-flow events rather than becoming concentrated within an overwide ditch. The project resulted in 1,125 linear feet of restored stream channel and 145 linear feet of restored headwater tributaries. Riffle-pool sequences, habitat structures, and woody material were incorporated throughout the system to improve aquatic habitat and support long-term channel stability. During construction, fish populations were carefully relocated to protect aquatic life within the project area.
The restoration also reconnected the stream to its floodplain, improving the watershed’s ability to manage stormwater, reduce erosion, and support healthy ecological processes.
Restoring the Landscape Around the Stream
The project’s benefits extend well beyond the creek channel itself.
Wetland restoration included the creation and enhancement of more than 10 acres of wetland habitat through the construction of wetland depressions, hummocks, and hollows designed to improve hydrology and increase habitat diversity. Across the site, native vegetation was reestablished through the creation of 13.3 acres of meadow habitat and 17.4 acres of reforested land. More than 3,500 bare-root trees and 802 live stakes were planted, while invasive species management helped ensure the long-term success of the restored ecosystem.
Together, these improvements created a diverse and resilient landscape capable of supporting wildlife, filtering runoff, improving water quality, and enhancing ecological connectivity throughout the watershed.
A Collaborative Investment in Water Quality
Like many large-scale restoration projects, Talcott Creek required a strong coalition of partners and funding sources to become a reality.
West Creek Conservancy secured more than $1.5 million in funding through the Great Lakes Commission‘s Great Lakes Sediment and Nutrient Reduction Program, the Ohio EPA’s Section 319 Program, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ H2Ohio Program. This collaborative investment enabled restoration activities that will provide measurable environmental benefits for decades to come.
The project’s anticipated outcomes include significant reductions in nutrient and sediment loading to Talcott Creek and the Grand River watershed. Annual reductions are estimated at approximately 153 tons of sediment, 119 pounds of phosphorus, and 959 pounds of nitrogen, helping improve downstream water quality while supporting healthier aquatic ecosystems.
Wildlife as a Measure of Success
Restoration projects are often measured through data — improved hydrology, reduced sediment loads, restored acreage, and enhanced habitat quality. Yet some of the most meaningful indicators come from the wildlife that returns to use these landscapes.

While no single wildlife observation defines project success, sightings like these demonstrate how restored habitats can contribute to broader ecological resilience and provide resources for native species across the region.
