Shoreline stabilization immediately following construction.
EnviroScience, Inc. was contracted to complete construction oversight and native planting for shoreline stabilization and nature-based shoreline restoration for Scheef East Point Nature Preserve located in the northeast corner of South Bass Island, Ohio. This project was completed to address severe coastal erosion leading to loss of land and habitat on this Lake Erie island with the goal of stabilizing the shoreline and improving habitat for fish and wildlife.
Approximately 650 linear feet of shoreline was stabilized and restored. Construction included the addition of substrate along the shoreline to replace material lost over time due to erosive wave action. The substrate was graded to create a gradual slope to minimize future erosion and facilitate establishment of native plants. Boulders were added at the face to dissipate wave energy and further minimize erosion. Boulder clusters were also placed 5-10 feet offshore to disrupt wave action and force reaching the shoreline.
Native seed was spread and 1,640 live stakes were installed across the shoreline following construction. Additionally, 88 native containerized trees and 530 native plugs were planted to enhance habitat and provide stability and resilience for the site.
This project was funded by three grants including the National Coastal Resilience Fund (National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Clean Ohio Conservation Fund (Ohio Public Works Commission), and Emergency Erosion Assistance Grant (Ohio Department of Natural Resources).
