Biologist Tyson Kurtz Earns PWS Certification

EnviroScience Biologist Tyson Kurtz, PWSCongratulations to EnviroScience Biologist Tyson Kurtz for achieving the designation of Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS certification) from The Society of Wetland Scientists!

The Society of Wetland Scientists is a professional organization formed to promote understanding, conservation, protection, restoration, science-based management, and sustainability of wetlands across the globe.

The Society developed the Professional Certification Program (PCP) in 1994 for certification of wetland science training and experience to meet the needs of professional ecologists, hydrologists, soil scientists, educators, agency professionals, consultants, and others who practice wetland science. This program serves the public’s need to reliably identify qualified individuals to assess and manage wetland resources around the world.

A Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) meets stringent education requirements (minimum B.A. or B.S. degree with significant coursework in biological and physical sciences, mathematics, and wetland ecology).

Following this comprehensive higher education in wetland science, a PWS must have professional experience of at least five years as a wetland scientist that demonstrates the application of current technical knowledge dealing with wetland resources and activities.

Finally, a PWS provides acknowledgment to scientific peers of their adherence to standards of professional ethics for the conduct and practice of wetland science. Certification enhances recognition of wetland science within other disciplines, especially in multi-disciplinary work environments.

At the current time, PWS is the only international certification program that is specific to wetland science.

Congratulations, Tyson, on this awesome achievement!

Longsolid & Round Hickorynut Mussels Listed Threatened

FRESHWATER MUSSELS DEEMED THREATENED: March 8, 2023

Asheville, NC—After careful review of scientific data and consideration of public comment, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) listed both longsolid (Fusconaia subrotunda) and round hickorynut (Obovaria subrotunda) freshwater mussels as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). According to the USFWS, they are “also designating critical habitat and tailoring ESA protections to protect these imperiled species from going extinct throughout all or a significant portion of its range in rivers and streams in the eastern United States.”

Longsolid Mussel (Fusconaia subrotunda)The longsolid mussel can live up to 50 years and grow five inches long. It is currently found in ten states (AL, IN, KY, NY, NC, OH, PA, TN, VA, and WV.)

Of the 60 known populations, “48 are in a very limited area with no sign of young mussels growing into adults. Such populations have very low resiliency. This is down from a historical high of 160 populations. The mussel is no longer found in Georgia and Illinois,” according to the USFWS.

Round Hickorynut Mussel (Obovaria subrotunda)The round hickorynut mussel can live up to 15 years and grow three inches long. It is currently found in nine states (AL, IN, KY, MI, MS, OH, PA, TN, and WV.)

Of the 69 known populations, “49 are in a very limited area with no sign of young mussels growing into adults. Such populations have very low resiliency. The mussel is no longer found in Georgia, Illinois, or New York,” according to the USFWS.

USFWS Quote About ESA Protections, Recovery, and PreservationEnviroScience has permitted malacologists throughout the ranges for both species of freshwater mussels with extensive mussel-handling experience.

Not only do we provide field support, but we also provide Section 7 consultation services (Biological Assessment including effects on Critical Habitat) to meet the requirements of the ESA between our clients and their federal nexus.

Visit our Endangered Mussel Surveys page to learn more about EnviroScience’s malacologists and the expert services we provide our clients to ensure compliance with ESA protections and guidelines.

National Serpent Day – Featuring EnviroScience Snake Services

Smooth GreensnakeSnake surveys are often performed as part of a terrestrial survey or wildlife inventories at EnviroScience. These surveys effectively detect the presence or absence of endangered, threatened, or rare species at a proposed development project. With the decline of many snake species, more species are likely to soon be listed under the federal Endangered Species Act or state regulations. As this occurs, the importance of snake surveys will only increase.

Timber RattlesnakeOur experienced herpetologists have scientific collector’s permits or are on state or federal agency lists of qualified rare or listed snake surveyors. Our snake biologists are experts at detecting and tracking reptiles in their diversity of habitats. They use a variety of tools and methods to collect thorough and accurate data. For example, Visual Encounter Surveys (VES) are performed for snakes by searching favorable habitats during the spring and summer months. Specialized traps, such as “box traps” along drift fences and artificial habitats, like cover boards, are designed to document species that are difficult to find during visual surveys.

Standard snake survey protocols usually begin with a habitat assessment (Phase I Survey), when our qualified biologists perform a walkthrough and visual search for potential critical snake habitats to evaluate a proposed project area. Critical snake habitat is often considered to be either the potential over-wintering habitat or potential summer-gestating habitat. Also, early spring basking, foraging, and transient habitat may be part of the habitat assessment for certain species.

Eastern RibbonsnakeShould potential critical habitat be found during the habitat assessment—and if the critical habitat is difficult to avoid during construction of a project—the next phase of the snake evaluation could be what is called a presence/absence survey (Phase II Survey), which typically involves the search for snakes during their active season and appropriate weather conditions in the potential denning, basking, gestating, or foraging habitat.

Another type of snake service (especially for venomous snakes) that EnviroScience provides is called “snake construction monitoring.” This service entails the presence of a permitted snake biologist on an active construction site during the active season of the snake species. For the safety of workers (when venomous snakes are present) and snakes, our biologists are on-site before and during construction to inspect and clear the project area (including staging areas and access roads) of snakes and to capture and remove any snakes that may interfere with work activities.

Our snake biologists perform surveys for all of the threatened, endangered, or special concern species listed below:

  • Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)
  • Kirtland’s Snake (Clonophis kirtlandii)
  • Copper-bellied Watersnake (Nerodia erythrogaster neglecta)
  • Lake Erie Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon insularum)
  • Smooth Greensnake (Opheodrys vernalis)
  • Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys aestivus)
  • Eastern Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus)
  • Plains Gartersnake (Thamnophis radix)
  • Queen Snake (Regina septemvittata)
  • Northern Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen)
  • Northern Pine Snake (Pituophis melanoleucus)
  • Corn Snake (Pantherophis gutatta)

How to Support Wildlife During the Winter

Deer Stands in Snowy ForestIt goes without saying that the frigid months of winter aren’t just a struggle for people—they’re tough for animals and plants too! Reduced sunlight, extreme conditions like freezing temperatures and snow, and limited food sources make survival difficult.

A waxy cuticle prevents evergreen trees from losing their leaves in the winter.

While most animals migrate, adapt, or hibernate to survive the winter months, plants don’t have the option of migration. Evergreen plants maintain their leaves with a waxy cuticle that prevents their leaves from drying out, while deciduous plants drop their leaves and go dormant. Perennial plants go dormant during the winter, while annual plants die and rely on their seeds to overwinter.

Animals require three things for survival: shelter, food, and water. Below are some suggestions to help make things a little easier for local wildlife during the cold winter months.

PROVIDE SHELTER

Allow downed logs to remain in an out-of-the-way area of your yard to provide food sources and shelter for animals in the cold winter months. One simple way to help provide shelter for animals is to leave some areas of your yard a little “messy.” For example, refrain from clipping and removing all dead stems and leaves from your flower beds, and allow a pile of leaves, brush, or downed logs to remain in an out-of-the-way area of your yard.

Unpruned Hydrangea in Small Leaf PileMany insects overwinter in leaf litter, so these simple practices provide both food sources and shelter for small animals. Leftover fall decorations such as a bale of straw provide overwintering habitats for insects, small mammals, and even salamanders! Evergreen plants also provide shelter for animals on cold winter days.

PROVIDE FOOD

Holly

Bird feeders are a popular way to add food resources to the ecosystem—just make sure you keep them clean, so they do not spread disease. One easy way to add both food and shelter to your yard is by planting native trees and shrubs that persistently bear fruit.

American holly is a familiar evergreen shrub with red berries. Other shrub species that provide winter food and habitats are Winterberry holly, Red osier dogwood, hawthorns, crabapples, and native Viburnum species. Also, consider leaving some or all of your roses untrimmed, as rose hips are a good source of winter food.

PROVIDE WATER

Place a shalllow bowl of water covered with twigs for birds to hydrate, not bathe. In areas near lakes and streams, animals are often able to remain sufficiently hydrated. In other areas, a shallow bowl of water outside can provide a much-needed resource for birds. Bird baths should be avoided during the winter, as they can lead to frozen feathers and hypothermia. Instead, place a nonmetallic grate or some dark rocks and twigs over and/or in a shallow water bowl to allow for drinking but not bathing. A safely heated bowl is another option.

It doesn’t take much to help animals during the winter months. In fact, as described in some of the examples above, sometimes not doing something (like pruning or raking) is doing something! Even the smallest of efforts to help support local wildlife can make a significant difference.

2022 Mike Trump Chili Cookoff for Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank

EnviroScience Project Designer Mike TrumpOn November 16, 2022, the employee-led Corporate Responsibility Committee (CRC) at EnviroScience resumed its annual “Mike Trump Chili Cookoff,” named in loving memory of the late project designer, dear friend, and first-year chili cookoff winner. This charitable event to raise funds for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank had been postponed for two years due to COVID-19.

2022 Mike Trump Chili Cookoff Winners Brad & Elise Bartelme Share the Coveted Wooden Spoon PrizeFifteen EnviroScience staff members tried to concoct the best chili, and employees paid $10 to taste each one and determine the winner. Brad Bartelme and Elise Bartelme, walked away with the coveted, first-place wooden spoon with their Belize-inspired chili, with Alison Frohn and Greg Hocevar placing second and third.

The CRC’s goal was to raise $1,000 for the foodbank, but true to the good nature of our employees and the spirit of EnviroScience as a company, the committee was thrilled to present $952 to the foodbank on December 1st (Double Dollar Day), which was matched for a total of $1,904! This will provide 7,616 meals for people in need just in time for the holidays.
