EnviroScience biologists are adept at surveying mammals, a notoriously difficult group of animals to detect. Techniques frequently used include Visual Encounter Surveys (VES), track and scat identification, and analysis of other secondary evidence. Specialized traps and cameras are used in conjunction with food or scent bait to aid in crepuscular or nocturnal species detection. Sonar detectors are used to determine bat densities while mist netting is performed for hands-on bat identification. These surveys are also used to detect the presence of the federally endangered Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis).
